Should Christians Be Involved in Politics?

To answer that question, let’s take a look at some scriptures. Let’s start at the beginning when God made man.

Then God said, “Let us make man in Our image; according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” So God created man in His own image in the image of God He created him male and female He created them. Then God blessed them, and God said to them. “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it, have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves on the earth (Genesis 1:26-28). 

God’s purpose for man was to GOVERN the earth. It was a command. 

God is the creator of everything, even the earth. He made man to rule and reign on the earth. He is government and He established government on the earth. 

Government is God-Ordained

Let every soul be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God and the authorities that exist are appointed by God (Romans 13:1). 

Isaiah 9:6 tells us that the government is upon Jesus’ shoulder. 

For unto us a Child is born; unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6). 

If the government is on Jesus’ shoulder and we are His body, then the government is upon our shoulder. Jesus rules and reigns down through his body — the Church. Remember in Matthew 28:18-19, He told his disciples as He was leaving that all authority had been given to Him in heaven and on earth — therefore you go. 

So why do so many Christians today avoid anything to do with government and won’t vote. Because many cite “the separation of church and state.” But that phrase is not in the Bill of Rights, it is not in the Declaration of Independence, and it is not in our Constitution.

The majority of our Founding Fathers were Christians from different camps or denominations. They did not want to establish a government religion, nor did they want government interference in the church. Their goal was freedom of worship, not the removal of Christian influence from public life. 

Where Did the Phrase Come From?

In 1802, Thomas Jefferson wrote a letter to the Danbury Baptist Association describing a “wall of separation between church and state.” His meaning was clear: to protect churches from government interference, not to prevent religious convictions from influencing public policy or civic life. 

Certain people have been using this quote to argue for the separation of church and state for generations. They have intentionally misled us by taking it completely out of context. Remember, when a text is taken out of context, all you have left is a con. 

The Founders knew that it was up to us (meaning the Christian citizens of the Republic) to keep our nation on track. This is why they expected everybody to be able to read. The reasoning was straightforward. If you can’t read, you can’t study the Bible. If you can’t study the Bible, you can’t grow in Christ and practice morality. Without morality, you won’t be able to recognize ungodly government leadership. If you can’t recognize ungodly leadership, you can’t resist it. If you don’t resist, you lose your liberty. 

How do you resist ungodly leadership? By voting for the right people. 

Our forefathers saw to it that we live under a constitutional republic where the people rule through leaders they have elected to office. Our constitutional republic is suffering right now because many in the church have backed out of government and no longer vote. It’s the church’s fault that we are right now fighting for the survival of our constitutional republic.

Psalm 11:3 states, “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Proverbs 29:2 declares, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice; but when a wicked man rules the people groan.”  

There are a lot of people in public office who are out to destroy our country. If you are a Christian and haven’t been voting — REPENT. Then pray and go vote. Vote for leaders who uphold biblical principles and support the constitutional republic God has blessed us with.

It is not optional. It is your duty.
