As we celebrate Independence Day, our hearts are filled with gratitude for the incredible freedoms we enjoy as Americans. We are blessed to live in a nation where we can gather for worship without fear, openly carry a Bible, proclaim the Gospel, and raise our families in the knowledge of God. These are blessings that countless people around the world can only dream of experiencing.
Our freedom did not come without a cost. Throughout our nation's history, brave men and women have sacrificed, fought, and even given their lives to preserve the liberties we often take for granted. We honor their courage and thank God for the privilege of living in a country founded upon Christian principles of liberty.
Yet as wonderful as political freedom is, there is another kind of freedom that every person desperately needs.
Jesus spoke these powerful words in John 8:36: "If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed."
Think about that for a moment. A person can live in the freest nation on earth and still be bound by fear, addiction, guilt, shame, bitterness, anxiety, or sin. No government, law, or constitution can free the human heart from those chains. Only Jesus Christ can.
That is why the greatest freedom we will ever experience is in the sacrifice made by the Son of God. While soldiers shed their blood to preserve our nation's freedom, Jesus shed His blood to secure our eternal freedom. He paid the price that none of us could pay so that we might be forgiven, reconciled to God, and set free from the power of sin.
The Apostle Paul reminds us in Galatians 5:1, "Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free." Christian liberty is not simply the freedom to do whatever we please. It is the freedom to become everything God created us to be. We are free to worship wholeheartedly, serve joyfully, forgive generously, and live victoriously through the power of the Holy Spirit.
As we watch fireworks light up the night sky this week, may they remind us not only of the birth of a nation but also of the greater hope found in Christ. Let every waving flag remind us to thank God for our country and let every cross remind us of the Savior who offers freedom that reaches far beyond this life.
I am thankful to be an American. I am thankful for the liberties our nation provides. But above all else, I am thankful that through Jesus Christ I have been made truly free.
This Independence Day, let's celebrate both blessings. Thank God for the freedom to worship—and even more, thank Him for the Savior who makes us free indeed.
