As we step into a new year, many people focus on changing habits, improving routines, or setting new goals. Those things have value, but Scripture points us to a far more powerful place to begin: our words. Proverbs 18:21 tells us plainly, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” If death and life are in the tongue, then the direction of our year is shaped not first by what we do with our hands, but by what we release from our mouths.
Every believer has been given authority in Christ. That authority is exercised primarily through words—faith filled, covenant aligned words that agree with what God has already said. When our confession lines up with His promises, we are not trying to make something happen; we are simply giving voice to what He has already established.
The new year is a natural moment to reset the way we speak. Many of us have allowed careless words to slip out—words of frustration, fear, or limitation. We say things like “I’m so tired,” “Nothing ever works out,” “I can’t remember,” or “I just can’t handle this.” Those statements may feel harmless, but they shape the atmosphere around us and train our hearts to expect defeat. Jesus said in Mark 11:23 that we will have what we say. If that’s true—and it is—then our words matter far more than we often realize.
Resetting your words doesn’t mean pretending challenges don’t exist. It means choosing to speak truth that is higher than the challenge. When your body feels weak, you can still say, “The Lord is the strength of my life.” When finances look tight, you can declare, “My God supplies all my need according to His riches in glory.” If brain fog sets in say, “The Holy Spirit brings things to my remembrance.” When uncertainty tries to settle in, you can boldly confess, “The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not lack direction.”
This isn’t positive thinking. It’s covenant thinking. It’s aligning your mouth with the reality of who God is and who you are in Him.
So as this new year begins, I encourage you to make a simple but powerful commitment: Speak life. Speak the Word. Speak what God says, not what fear says. Let your confession become a daily act of faith and agreement.
Here is a declaration you can begin with each morning:
“Father, in the name of Jesus, I choose to speak life today. My words will agree with Your Word. I declare that I am blessed, strengthened, guided, and equipped by Your Spirit. This year will be marked by Your goodness, and I will speak in line with Your promises.”
If you will reset your words, you will reset the atmosphere of your life. And as you speak life, you will step boldly into the year God has prepared for you.
